Release Notes

This release includes many updates to several platforms available in the Unified Middleware Distribution as further described below:

The Globus platform, augmented by IGE with several extension into its IGE-2 release end of January is almost completely included in this UMD release. IGE-2 raises the base-line of GTK components from the 5.0.x series to 5.2.x including a last-minute patch for Globus GridFTP 5.2.0 for maintaining backwards compatibility with EMI's current DPM and StoRM storage services. GridWay, GridSAM and the long waited for SAGA adaptors will be included in the next UMD release

The server side of the UNICORE6 platform, delivered by EMI, received a complete update including local user management and VO services, raising the baseline of core UNICORE6 services to version 4.2.0. The remainder of the UNICORE6 platform are planned to be updated once they are published by EMI, with the next UMD release.

The gLite platform (also delivered by EMI) received a maintenance update involving various components (as listed below), and including fixes for two security vulnerabilities found in BDII and VOMS. As usual, additional information is available in the UMD 1.6.0 wiki entry.

UMD 1 is available for 64bit Scientific Linux (i.e. x86_64 processor architecture).

In general, software available in the UMD is installed according to the product's specific installation instructions provided by the Technology Provider. Release Notes
This is an emergency release to address an issue found using uberftp 2.5 from EPEL repository.   The new binary has a dependency with the new globus 5.2 libs and brakes UMD repository consistency. With this release we introduce an older version of Uberftp that fixes this issue.

This release focuses on maintaining the gLite platform provided by EMI, introducing the long-awaited WMS as a Compute Job scheduling service. It is accompanied by an update to its complement, Logging & Bookkeeping (L&B).

UMD 1.2.0 is the third release of UMD-1 (Unified Middleware Distribution) made available for the EGI production infrastructure. This release continues the process to provide a complete set of software services for EGI's user communities to use and integrate on.

Release Notes

This release features the following new products, further completing the set of software services available to access the EGI production infrastructure. Most notably, select services from the Globus software stack are published in the UMD for the first time as described below:

  • ARC CE 1.0.1: A service accepting compute job submissions to be executed on the production infrastructure
  • dCache 1.0.12-6: A service for managing storage locations and spaces; provides file access and file transfer facilities
  • Globus GridFTP 5.0.3: Globus' multi-purpose file transfer server implementing the GridFTP protocol.
  • Globus RLS 5.0.3: The Replica Location Service of the Globus toolkit allows searching for multiple locations of the same data set.
  • Globus MyProxy 5.0.3: The popular Credential Management service developed by the GLobus Alliance.

In addition to that, this UMD update release provides updates to the following services, as they were made available by the respective Technology Providers:

  • Argus 1.3.1: A distributed, centrally managed authorisation service.
  • CREAM 1.13.2: A popular service accepting compute job submissions.
  • ARC Client 1.0.1: Client tools to use the infrastructure services of the ARC middleware stack.
  • ARC InfoSys 1.0.1: An information discovery and search services tailored for ARC based computing infrastructures.

Installation Notes

This is the third release of the UMD-1 that is made available for EGI's production infrastructure. All products in the UMD 1.2.0 release were verified against EGI's current Quality Criteria (for further information, please see the documentation links) to support 64bit Scientific Linux 5 (x86_64 processor architecture). For more information on EGI's Software Provisioning process, see MS508 and MS409.

Installation notes and known issues are collected on a per-product basis, and are available in the EGI WIKI. When browsing the EGI Repository, each product available in this release will provide a link to the respective entry in the mentioned Wiki space, providing specific information about any issues discovered during Verification and/or StagedRollout. 

When using the UMD repository for the first time, your systems need to be configured to access the appropriate repositories in a specific manner. Installation instructions and configuration options are described at this location.

If you are upgrading from previous UMD releases (e.g. 1.0.0, or 1.1.0) then in-place upgrades are supported. Please consult the product specific documentation referenced at the individual product's announcement pages listed below.

Known Issues

As this is the third release of UMD-1, and uses a different structure than previous releases of new products, each product must be installed from scratch as in-place updates are not supported for non UMD releases.  Additional installation notes and known issues are collected on a per-product base, and are available in the EGI Wiki (see Additional Details for more information)

Change Log

This release contains several new products providing services for accessing the EGI production infrastructure, supporting the Globus based resource centres in EGI. For more information, follow the links provided in the product overview table provided the end of this release announcement.

The updates provided with this release are summarised below; more details are provided in the individual product release announcements referenced in the product overview table at the end of this UMD release announcement:
Several authentication and authorisation issues were resolved in Argus, CREAM and ARC Clients.
ARC InfoSys is not better integrated in the overall Information Discovery infrastructure within EGI.
